13 LIFE- CHANGING MAKE- UP TIPS FROM THE PRO

Make- up, they say, is a woman's weapon. If it is combined confidence and a smile, then that would surely be lethal.
I had the privilege of being given the secrets to applying make- up from an expert. Here are some tips:

1.Apply a slight amount of milk of magnesium on your face before using your foundation. It has been proven to help smoothen the face.
2.The most essential make- up item is your foundation. So buy the best.

3.Use your mascara on both the top and bottom eyelashes. For the top one, curl the lashes upwards and do the opposite for the bottom one.
4.Always do your make- up in light. You might be surprise as to how you look when you step out if you do your make- up in the dark.
5.Buy make- up products that compliment your skin tone.
6.Cover up bags under eyes by applying concealer only to the shadow of the bags.

7.Put on foundation only after doing your eye make up
8.Use clean make up brushes. Wash your brushes at least once a week.
9.Your concealer is your corrector, especially if you make a mistake while doing the eyebrow arch.
10.When applying make- up, you must know that your best tools  are your fingers.
11.To make your lipstick matte, use loose powder and a tissue
12.To make your eyelashes grow and look great, before your go to bed, put castor oil or Vaseline on them
13.Spray sparingly hairspray over your make- up to seal it.

LIFE IS NOT PERFECT YET…

I don’t know of someone in this world who has always been a 100% happy
I don’t know of someone in this world who has never been hurt, angry or sad
I don’t know of someone in this world who has who has never been betrayed, broken hearted or rejected
That does not exist

Life is not perfect yet it is its imperfections which make it perfect

Sometimes we hurt ourselves
Sometimes others hurt us
Sometimes we make mistakes and regret later
If you’re living a breezy perfectly flawless life then maybe you
are not being true to yourself

You can’t please everyone all the time
A thousand times, people are going to hurt you
A thousand times, you are going to hurt others

The funny thing about life is that we are the only ones who remember our mistakes
We are the only ones who remember how people hurt us
If you are going to let your life be ruled by negative emotions, then you are not seeing the big picture

This world is full of people who never achieve anything because of their emotions
But seriously, emotions were never meant to be bad
Once in a while, just let yourself be hurled up by your emotions
But never ever let it last for too long
You are the only one who gets hurt

Leave everything behind you- all the mistakes and insecurities and start to live life each day with a jolly disposition.

CELEBRATING A LEGEND: KWAME NKRUMAH

Every Septemper 18 is observed as a public holiday to mark the birthday of  Ghana's first president, The Right Honourable Kwame Nkrumah. Born on 18th September, 1909 in a small town called Nkroful in Ghana, the then Gold Coast, this gifted man proved that indeed we can use our voice to change the world.
With bravery he led Ghana to independence and has truly left footprints in the sands of time.
He believed so much in Africa’s potential. It is no suprise that he was one of the founding members of the organization of Africa Unity.

MOTHER- IN- LAW PHENOMENON

Not another round

It has become a custom to call one’s mother whenever the cry of a new born is heard. The sudden shock of being a newbie mother cannot be handled alone. It was in this light that the Oforis decided to call on board the ever able, ever young, ever super energetic Mama Sabina, Mrs. Ofori’s mum.
Yes, she did her job meticulously. In fact, her work exceeded expectations, but it crossed the invisible line. Hmmm…

Mama Sabina became a dictator and tyrant. Consequently, her daughter and her husband found the simply mundane task of going to their own home an ordeal like passing through the fires of hell. I exaggerate to make a point!

Putting ice cubes on your burnt fingers always feels so relieving, it ameliorates the pain. The relief that the Oforis had when Mama Sabina went beyond the veil can be compared  to having ice cubes on one’s burnt fingers. Lol, exaggerating to make a point.

Perhaps the last and final decision the Oforis had to make was that concerning where they would have to bury dear Mother- in- law. Burying her in Israel where they lived as foreigners was going to be just a cool $500 while burying her in their home country was going to be $5000. Mr. Ofori was the one releasing the funds, hence, he had the onus of making the final choice. Everyone thought that he was going to go in for the $500 bill but he didn’t. That was shocking! The big question was ‘’why?’’

To this he said, ‘’you see, Israel has a history of someone rising from the death in three days. Hmmm… it could be possible that my in- law could resurrect. I just don’t want there to be any loop hole. There shall be no other round of torture.’’

Don’t laugh alone, share the joy!

MONEY +EMPOWERMENT =?

It's all about the money

Mimi swore that she really loved him with her heart, soul and very being. In fact, she believed that her love could stand the test of time. Simply put, unwavering.

As fate would have it, they got married.
Pure bliss hovered around their marriage. Honey, sweetie, darling, were what they called each other by.
Six months into the marriage, things started changing and that catalysed a change in Mimi’s behaviour.
The trigger of that change reaction was the beautiful element called money.

The song that Mimi began singing frequently in church became “my house is built on nothing less…”
The joy that characterised the morning greeting and the welcome back home was suddenly missing. She no longer called Richard honey or sweetie, she simply gave a sluggish smile or said ‘huh’, which I must add is not even an adjective. In their room, she faced river Jordan while Riche faced river Niger.

Where is the heart and soul that vowed the unflinching love?

Surprisingly, Richard business bloomed magically and he was blessed with a copious amount of money. When he went home, his wife gave him the now normal nonchalant form of greeting. Then he decided to try a little experiment on his wife. As he looked straight ahead in to the mirror, he splashed the bundles of money on their bed and gingerly monitored any change in his wife. When Mimi caught sight of the money, she appeared so uplifted that her face turned into that of a Chinese. Yes, money can perform a face- lift.
‘’darling, you know I have been praying for you’’, Mimi said.
‘’awe… praying for me’’.

Money does empowers. It does wonders.

A WEAVE WEARER'S STORY REVEALED

The big weave debate

In a world of perfection, in a world where women are judged by their looks, they would stop at nothing in their quest to be ‘’beautiful’’. The weave is more often than not marketed as capable of fulfilling that wish. People of all walks of life wear them.  Celebs like Beyoncé, Megan Good, Kim Kardashian and Gabrielle union can be spotted wearing a weave most of the time. For those not born with naturally thick and long hair, the weave is seen as a remedy.

The weave is considered a form of protective style. Really, is it? Or we are being deceived?

After about a year and half of meticulously taking care of my mane, it had grown into a length that I was super proud of. It was thick and full of body. With a busy schedule and no free time, I decided to get a sew-in, which I thought would protect my hair while making me look gorgeous. I must add that that is the main reason thousands of ladies prey on the weave; they want a quick fix.

5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM TAYLOR SWIFT

Taylor swift has a track record of immense success. Entering the music industry at the tender age of 14, she has proved to be worthwhile. No wonder Taylor swift is a household name. She is a fashion icon, singer-songwriter, actress and above all an inspiration to the youth. I absolutely love all her songs from blank space to 22, you name it. Moreover, i always hear hear songs everywhere i turn. And when your songs are being sung by childern in the most unexpectected places, then you know that your music knows no boundaries.

There are those times when you are reading someone’s biography and it touches you so much. Gosh! You even wish that that was your life. A life well-lived, they call it. Kofi Annan can be said to be one of Africa’s biggest success story. His leadership skills is top-notch; a true role model he is and he was a former secretary-general of the United Nations. Reading dear Kofi’s biography has massively inspired me. Honestly, it does not matter where you start or where you are.

LOVE STORY

True Love Wins

‘’he is drowning! My son is drowning! Somebody, anybody, save him!’’, Lexi kept shouting.

‘’doctor, her condition has become progressively worse. She keeps screaming; save him, he’s drowning. Doc, you’ve got to do something. We’re losing her. She does not even remember us, her own children’’

‘’let me examine her again’’
‘’do go ahead’’

(Lexi is a 65 year old female, with three children, all women. She had been previously diagnosed with hypertension and insomnia. Arthritis later set in. She is menopausal and is now experiencing upscale levels of hallucinations).

GOSSIP CHILD 1

Sasha was always ready to gush out whatever she heard. Her mum and her best friend continually sat together under a tree in the middle of the compound and talk one after the other of every person in the community. Sasha as stubborn as she was, would on all occasion, eavesdrop on their conversation, then spread the gossip.

Image@ calvaryvista
Today, her mum and her beloved friend, affectionately called kwasi’s mama were talking of a newcomer in their neighbourhood. The newcomer was a foreign lady who could hardly make head and tail of the language of that community. You might be right to call it a birth defect because the new lady in the hood had an extremely big fat ugly nose. Sasha’s mum and her friend referred to the nose as ‘’nwenentipoli’’ which in their dialect meant big fat ugly nose.

The next day, the foreign lady went to kwasi’s mama’s joint to buy food. Sasha was there and upon recognising the lady, she decided to spill the beans. ‘’sis Naomi, sis Naomi’’, she called her but she did not hear. ‘’Sis Naomi, sis Naomi, my mother and kwasi’s mum are saying that your nose is ‘’nwenentipoli’’, she shouted on top of her voice. ‘’ children would always be children, look at her shouting for nothing’’. If only she knew what that word meant!
She would have stopped buying the food and would have given kwasi’s mum a hefty slap.

Kwasi’s mum reported the incidence to Sasha’s mother. On that fateful day, Sasha was giving the beating of her life. She was surely not going to gossip again. But hey, you can never be certain.

Gossip ends at a wise person's ears. Kill the habit.

THE SHADES IN TIME

They called us the young doctors. And they consider us ‘’the know it all, wanna know it all, the wannabes’’. What a name! Yes, I’m talking about med students.
Working in the internal medicine department is always fun. The cases are so intriguing, it is almost like solving a never-ending puzzle. The work there, is surely more exhilarating than watching the mysteries of C.S.I. Miami.

This woman, Elena, evoked in me a kind of empathy that I never even knew I had. I watched her as she fought for her dear life. Her legs were gruesomely swollen, her ribs were popping out of her chest and she could not move one half of her body (paraplegia). She was what doctors would describe a worst case scenario.

As I was reviewing some details on her in the patient folder with one of the nurses, a cute yet boyish doctor came into the ward and walked right towards Elena. Well, curiosity got the better part of me. I marched on to him like a freedom fighter ready to shot bullets right through the skulls of the oppressors.
 ‘’what's her diagnosis?’’, I asked.
‘’type 2 diabetes mellitus with diabetic nephropathy’’
 ‘’okay’’
‘’so you know what diabetes is?’’
In a classic med school style, I went on firing upon him facts upon facts about diabetes. I actually looked like a guy ridiculously trying so hard to woo a girl. And you can imagine the girl going all so like I don’t like you, I like you. Gosh, enough of the jibber jabber!

If you ever seen a toddler licking his lollipop and playfully running his finger through a giraffe’s fur, then you surely came face to face with the element called joy. Joy is sculptured on his very being and even the air the swirls around him whispers joy. I was as joyous just like that toddler as I observe a femoral tap being done on Elena. It was probably because Dr. Cutie was doing the procedure, and more importantly because she was finally responding to treatment and we were doing our best.

Life has many phases; time has many shades, we can't always predict tomorrow. But we can make a concious effort to breathe,  relax and enjoy every moment.

FROZEN SHADOW

I was beyond surprise when a posh shiny black salon car stopped right where I stood. As the glasses rolled down, I came to appreciate the breath- taking view of an incredibly handsome man. His hair was well combed like cement meticulously plastered on to a wall. His skin glowed like the sunrise and his teeth as white as snow. His combo showed how much a fashionista he was. He wore a black polo shirt with white strips and perfectly fitting blue jeans.
‘’what’s your name?’’
‘’Rose’’
‘’ Rose, would you want to go out? Take a ride with me?’’, he said in a playful yet guyish tone which kind of pissed me out.
‘’no, I don’t go out with strangers’’ but  deep down, I wanted to jump into the car, rest my head on his masculine shoulders and interlock my fingers in his as we listen to john legends’ song; all of me.
I did not want to conclude that it was love at first sight, but it was one hell of forceful magnetic attraction.
‘’can I at least take a walk with you?’’ I did not object. As we strode along the street, I breathed him in as if he was the breath of life. When I reached my destination, I thanked him, then we exchanged contact details.
And that’s where our love story begun.

Like Juliet, I started sneaking around to meet my Romeo. Such a perfect gentleman he was, never did he even try to touch me.
Everything happened so quickly. I could hardly believe the fact that we were getting married. I know this might sound ridiculous, but I think the only reason why my parents accepted him so quickly was because he was cloaked in wealth. Yes, my fiancé gave millions of dollars to my parents as a gift after our engagement.

Wedding day
I could literally hear my heart pounding in my chest as I walked towards the altar. In a few minutes, I was going to be Mrs. I was living in dream land!
Everyone was suddenly taken aback when the w7edding premises was raided by the police. My sweetheart,  my husband- to- be was being arrested for drug trafficking. Like Rihanna sung in her song stay. All I could wish for was for him to stay. ’’ Stay!’’, I shouted. ‘’Stay!’’. And there I was like a frozen shadow.

 What a beautiful painful nightmare!

OCEAN IN A SAND BUCKET

I found myself midway between the rocky towering mountains and the never- ending ocean. Goosebumps popped up on my skin as the cool breeze swung by; the water washed my sand- filled feet as I inhaled the wonder around. Every drop of water reminded me of how vast the ocean is. Not surprising, the oceans cover 71% of the earth's surface and contain 97% of the earth's water. Could you dare to imagine the ocean in a bucket a sand bucket?

Life can sometimes seem overwhelming, like 'an ocean in a sand bucket'. It knocks you in the head and kicks you in the butt. Sometimes you feel like escaping from this world altogether.

This anonymous quote: "use your smile to change the world; don't let the world change your smile" highlights the value of having a positive mindset in life and seeing the blessing in each day. Our minds are powerful and so are our thoughts. Honestly,  it is our thoughts that define who we become. Mahamat Ghandi frames it this way:  "keep your thoughts positive for they become your words. Keep your words positive for they become your behaviour.  Keep your behaviour positive because your behaviour becomes your habit. Keep your habits positive because your habits become  your values. Keep your values positive for your values become your destiny."

As we grow older, we somtimes tend to lose trust and begin to see the seeming impossibilities, but that is exactly when we got to view life from a different angle. See that ocean in whatever sand bucket as a mark of possibility.

BETRAYAL

Was It ever love?

Thesmilingdreams.blogspot.com

In a small rented room, with old furniture and flaking wallpaper, Josh was about doing the nasty nasty with Marie. As the rain drops fell on the roof, romantic melody played in the background. The stars sparkled brightly and the aroma of scented candles filled the air. And there, they were about to cross the boundary of friendship. Josh delicately removed the sleeves of her shoulders, kissed the top of her head and squeezed her tightly. ‘’I love you’’, he said. She interlaced her fingers into his, then looked straightly into his eyes. The atmosphere was filled with passion and desire. She gave herself freely to him. And that night they bound themselves together.

When the sun gave birth to a new day, joy was boiling up inside her. All she could dream about was waking up into the arms of her prince charming. But she was disappointed. Josh had left. Engraved upon a paper on the bedside table was a message by Josh and it read ‘’thanks for the romantic ride".

Behind all the sweet and awfully romantic words was a heart full of deception. All he ever wanted was to add Marie to his list of girls he had slept with. Moreover, Marie completed the list. ‘’ten lays before my wedding, before all the vows and the restriction of marriage life’’, Josh said as he stared at himself in the mirror. Clearly, he was admiring his physique, his curly hair and his sexy eyes which shone brighter than the sun. ‘’I’m so hot, I want to kiss myself, oh the sweet delight of victory’’.

For days, she grieved over the fact that she had been treated like a trash. ‘’ how could I. I barely knew him’’, she cried. If only tears could wash away the pain and the hurt. If only tears could erase yesterday’s story. If only tears could bring her the strength she so much needed. But the biggest blow was yet to come.

On Saturday, her best friend was marrying the very man who crushed her heart and world into pieces. ‘’ damn you, damn you, Josh’’, she shouted as she held the invitation card in her hands. She chuckled as she looked at the image of the whore of a man. And etched on the contours of her face, was a wicked smile that spelt revenge.

Message~ Waiting is a sign of true love♥ and patience. True manhood does seek to compromise a woman's purity; true manhood stands up to heroically protect it.

NIGHTMARE DRESSED LIKE A DAYDREAM

Thesmilingdreams.blogspot.com

We made love.

It was full of pleasure and intensity. Mike knew exactly where to touch; such a true and thorough lover he was. The problem was that he was my sister’s boyfriend. I knew that what I was doing was not right, but in his arms, all the guilt vanished away. Perhaps, it was his seductive words. Perhaps, it was his masculinity. Perhaps, I was just a woman dying to hear a man tell her how much he loved and adored her.

‘’I am going to take a shower’’, I told Mike.
‘’Honey, my erection has not subsided’’. I thought he was just joking, but when I returned to the room he was screaming. His manliness was still hard and well engorged with blood.

‘’Did you take any Viagra again’’. To this, he gave a nod. Being my usual all-knowing brave self, I decided to take matters in to my own hands. I reassured him; telling him that all was going to be well. I then call a colleague, Alice in the urogenital section of the surgical wind of the hospital to bring me some supplies. Basically, I intended to give an enema, give intracavernous injection or possibly perform aspiration. As we waited for Alice, Mike applied ice packs to his penis and perineum.

I knew Alice was a gossip, but calling her was so much a better idea than showing up in the hospital with my sister’s boyfriend. Nevertheless, Alice called Monique, my sister.

When Alice and Monique showed up in the room together, I gasped in unbelief and run away. I asked myself why I even agreed to go on this 72- hour uninterrupted super romantic adventure with Mike. My daydream surely turned into a nightmare.

Right now, I’m hiding. Hiding from the world as I drink in a bar, wishing so dearly that I could turn back the hands of time.

Still smiling in the dreamworld…

Mike's condition is referred to as priapism.
It is a medical emergency. And if not treated immediately could lead to scarring and permanent erectile dysfunction.

SMILE: AN APOCRYPHAL THEORY

Why do you Smile?
The smile on a child's face can soothe any heart. I found my room turned upside down and in a state of grave mess. Apparently,  my brother had ransacked my room in his bid to find where I had hidden his game boy. I must say that I was furious, but upon seeing that innocent yet mischievous smile carved on his face, I was flooded within with a great sense of love and momentarily lost all the energy and zeal I had to rain punishment on him. You see, a smile is contagious; it is powerful and has this aura of creating happiness. Why do we smile I asked myself. You might call this an apocryphal theory but here is a breakdown as to why we smile.

Some smile because they are happy
Some smile because they want to be happy
Some smile because of hatred that they can’t hide
Some smile because they’ve discovered love
Some smile because of the anger flaming within
Some smile because of the peace flowing within
Some smile out of sadness
Some smile out of joy

Some smile because they are hiding their emotions
Some smile because they are showing their emotions.
Some smile because they want others to see them smile
Some smile because they want to see others smile
Some smile because they don’t know what to do
Some smile because they just figured out what to do

Some smile because there is hope
Some smile because there is no hope
Some smile because of something
Some smile because of nothing
Whatever your reasons are for smiling, keep on smiling
Not just because it makes your face look pretty
But because you want to
Because it is good for you.

Did you know?
Apart from the obvious social benefits of smiling such as making us look more approachable and seeming more trustworthy,
did you know that a smile realises endorphins into our body, thereby reducing stress; it boots our immune system and increases our productivity and creativity.
Yeah right,  great reasons to start smiling.
Adiós readers!

Smile and have a sunshine day!

A HEART IN HAND

Thesmilingdreams.blogspot

‘’Don’t die on me, I am not ready to lose you. You’re going to live’’, I murmured yet it was so audible to all. As he lied down, I recalled the first time I saw him. Justice was with his four sons and wife. They were so happy, happy because their father was going to get a new heart. Honestly, I could not envision going to his family and telling them that he did not make it.

As I massaged the heart once more, I was praying to God to save him.

Then his new heart started beating on its own. It was pure delight! The surgical team was filled with joy and pride.  Justice sure is a lucky man.

I pumped into the suction machine as I was leaving the O. R. and was about to fall, but then Alex held me. Alex happens to be my scrub nurse and we had gone out a couple of times. Our relationship was a love -hate one. We were literally the headline news in the hospital as we were never shy to display our love publicly. But he crushed my heart and turned my day- dream into a nightmare.  We broke up because he thought I was too much for him and that he was not in my league. To me, he was perfect. He was handsome in every sense of the word.

I still loved him.

‘’hey, how is my sweetie doing’’, said Jeff, my fiancé. Jeff was also a surgeon, a general surgeon. Everyone thought that he was perfect for me, but I did not love him.
‘’I’m great. Just going to check up on two patients in the I. C. U.’’
‘’You take care. I’ll call you’’. He then planted a kiss on my lips.
All I wanted was to end it once and for all with him and cancel the engagement. I did not want to marry a man I did not love. But I was mortified by the thought.

I finished my second surgery, a valve replacement at 2pm and was paged. Justice was coding. He could not breathe due to a lump which was blocking his airway. We had to do an immediate tracheostomy in order to save his life. He was then put on life support.
His wife came to me later that day and in words so filled with passion and emotion told me to take great care of her husband. ‘’Your husband is one hell of a fighter. Know that we our doing our best. His condition is stable and we our monitoring him’’, I said. She continued to tell me that Justice was her first love and could not foresee living without him. She told me about how they meet and how their love had grown over the years.
She rekindled my faith in love.

In the changing room, I met Alex and professed my undying love for him.
He did not utter a word. He simply hugged me tightly.  I did not know what it meant. I just enjoyed it while it lasted.

5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM BEN CARSON

Ben Carson in politics is a pleasant surprise. A story of a black doctor turned president would surely make headlines. Ben Carson is a force to reckon with and with so many accolades, I wonder how one manages to be humble. Thousands of people grew up idolising ben Carson, wishing to be just like him and even better; that’s a true role model. He has inspired lots and lots of people, especially the youth.

Just a glimpse; a story about a story

Was rolling in the sky like an acrobat as the truck knocked me off my feet. I was conscious yet unconscious, I could hear the screams and the insults the pedestrians murdered unto the truck driver. It, surely, was not a good day to die. What an imagination? A glimpse of what could be but is not. Reality check! I am stuck between two vehicles a dark- brown truck and a velvet saloon car. I came to my senses when the cars' horns promised to break my tympanic membrane. Honestly, I knew where I was going but I was lost in thought and lost in reality. I had a simple task but that turned into an ordeal.

 Fast forward
Yeah, I found the place that I should be. In a ward, beautifully decorated yet overcrowded. They say that to the untrained eye, every nook and cranny of the hospital seem the same. Thus it was not surprising when I was frantically exploring the place like a new born experiencing an orienting reflex.

And the story about a story begun in that ward.

She came in with a rare assortment of diseases.
Edith was an eighty year old woman who was diagnosed with leukaemia at a young age of ten. How she managed to survived throughout those years without transplant is a whole story all together. She had also been diagnosed with hypertension… chronic kidney failure and congestive heart disease. All indicators showed that she was going to die soon and fast. She was rushed to the hospital when she was run over by a motorcycle. She was into hypovolemic shock after losing so much blood. Probably the worst case the docs in the ER had faced in years.

She entered into a coma.

If you have ever wondered as to what ravages through a vegetable’s mind, then here is the catch.
TO BE CONTINUED…

BEING A WOMAN: A PRICELESS GIFT

Hello dearies, it has been quite a while since I posted anything. I promise to make it all up to you. Indeed, life outside blogging has been more demanding. Let me not bore you with any lengthy intro.

Being a woman is a priceless gift! To share, to care, to love, to procreate...the essence of a woman. Recently, we celebrated our mothers on mother’s day and it was a joyous occasion as new memories and bonds were established. In the mist of all the joy and exuberance, I was triggered into thinking about the future and how really motherhood would be like. A cacophony of thoughts and questions suddenly flooded my mind. I believe hundreds and thousands of women have snapped back at one point in time to visualise and assess what their future as mothers would be like.

The day before mothers' day, I had spent quite a considerable amount of time at the labour ward. I witnessed in awe the magic of childbirth and the expression of excitement on the mothers' face. I observed how the mothers gently squeezed their breasts and although only little drops of milk squirmed out sometimes, they were relentless. It is amazing how a woman moves from being just a daughter, a sister, a wife, a sister in law, a daughter in law to being also a mother.

Right from scratch, a mother sacrifices so much for her children. It is no wonder that many people attribute their success to their mothers. A mother helps the family adjust to new realities and challenges, a mother recognises the fire in her child and keeps it blazing, a mother has the potential to influence not just a human life, but also the society and generations to come.

After it all, put your baby on your chest and take in the wonder you’ve brought into the world.

A blog that I am totally in love with at the moment is: DIARY OF DOC DIVA. A big hi to you Gucci Ezeala, a wonderful mentor.
