5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM BEN CARSON

Ben Carson in politics is a pleasant surprise. A story of a black doctor turned president would surely make headlines. Ben Carson is a force to reckon with and with so many accolades, I wonder how one manages to be humble. Thousands of people grew up idolising ben Carson, wishing to be just like him and even better; that’s a true role model. He has inspired lots and lots of people, especially the youth.
His achievements in medicine are tremendous; separation of conjoined twins and hemispherectomy. This great man has taught me numerous things and today, I share with you five things I learned from him.

Risk taking

I believe that it was a risk dr. ben took when he decided to slice open the skulls of the binder twins in a quest to change their lives. There is so much we could achieve if we face our fears and take those risks. One thing I also do believe is that risk can only be taken when fears have been overcame; fear of failure of rejection, the list goes on. He rightly said that ‘’great risks bring greater success’’. Even, his current venture in to politics after retirement is a huge risk.

 Drive & Discipline

Being in med school is all about discipline, being a doctor is all about discipline, in fact a core concept of education is discipline. It was his drive for excellence that enabled him to follow a somewhat stringent study schedule and achieve work- life balance. Indeed, to be successful, discipline must be a hallmark.

Use of talent

All and sundry could contribute to nation building and lead a more successful life if talents are put to use. A talent need not be a complex task that you can do. Cooking, dancing, painting, writing, public speaking, etc. are all admired talents. Ben Carson has put his intelligence and writing to good use. He is the author of six bestselling books including: gifted hands, think big, take the risks and the big picture. In the book ‘gifted hands’, he illustrates his beginnings and his recipe for success. He always has something motivational to share.

Giving back

The philanthropic work of our dear retired brain surgeon cannot go unnoticed. The ben Carson scholars fund has truly change the lives of many people, awarding over 6,000 scholarships. In 2005, Ben Carson was awarded the William e prize for philanthropic leadership, in recognition for his work with the Carson scholars fund and other charitable giving throughout his life.

God

He believes highly in God and never dares to hide that fact. Like he said, ‘’never get too big for God’’. His somehow sudden decision to vie for the presidency of the United States, he believes is a calling from God.

There are also female doctors doing amazing work in politics, education, astronomy and others who deserve much needed recognition. Regina Benjamin, Patricia bath and Mae C. Jemison are famous female doctors who have chalked immense success.

Wishing you all the best in your endeavours!
