The big weave debate
In a world of perfection, in a world where women are judged by their looks, they would stop at nothing in their quest to be ‘’beautiful’’. The weave is more often than not marketed as capable of fulfilling that wish. People of all walks of life wear them. Celebs like BeyoncĂ©, Megan Good, Kim Kardashian and Gabrielle union can be spotted wearing a weave most of the time. For those not born with naturally thick and long hair, the weave is seen as a remedy. The weave is considered a form of protective style. Really, is it? Or we are being deceived?
After about a year and half of meticulously taking care of my mane, it had grown into a length that I was super proud of. It was thick and full of body. With a busy schedule and no free time, I decided to get a sew-in, which I thought would protect my hair while making me look gorgeous. I must add that that is the main reason thousands of ladies prey on the weave; they want a quick fix.
I was always complemented on how lovely, nice, good- looking, sleek…my weave was. Thus, I took real good care of it. I would take my time to comb it well and spray it in the morning. I must say that I was reluctant to even take down the sew-in; I kept it on my head for more than 2 months. Due to the massive new growth, I decided to relax my mane after a few days of taking down the weave, but the results were nothing to write home about. Maybe it was out of curiosity, maybe it was the delight of being complemented on my hair, maybe it was just a desire to gain extra points in the eyes of beauty, I did another sew in and the results were even worse. For the first time, I looked in the mirror and was unhappy about how my real hair looked.
I dare to ask the question again. Is the weave a protective style after all?
But honestly, I recount at one point in time past wearing a weave which gave me wonderful results. Needless to say, the weave could flourish hair. As I write this piece I have a newly bought weave ready to be used. I doubt using the weave anytime soon, I got to nurse my hair back to health. Generally, girls with natural hair get better results with weaves than those with relaxed hair. Perhaps it’s because natural hair tends to be stronger, plus it has no protein bonds broken down. Most black women have grown up believing that they can never have thick long healthy hair; F.Y.I because they keep having bad weave experiences. Nevertheless, they never blame the weave. It is high time we spend our money, time and energy in nourishing our hair rather than our weaves. The black woman is capable of having long healthy hair. Importantly, having a vision of long healthy hair is not enough, you got to work for it.
One thing that I believe is the key to healthy hair is conditioning. Condition, condition, condition… and I think is way better to be rocking your own waist length hair than to wear a weave. The choice is yours.
What has been your weave experience?
Still smiling in the dreamworld...
